“Twenty, what now?” anniversary exhibition at “Pinakothek der Moderne”

At Pinakothek der Moderne, exhibitions from four divisions await you in the form of the art collections “Sammlung Moderne Kunst”, “Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum” and “Staatliche Graphische Sammlung” as well as exhibitions at the Museum of Architecture. On the occasion of the museum’s 20th birthday, a special exhibition invites visitors to join in the discussion and think about the future of the four museums under one roof.
“The Blue Rider. Group dynamics” at Lenbachhaus

The Lenbachhaus Munich owns the world’s largest collection of art by the ‘Blaue Reiter’, one of the most important avant-garde artist groups at the beginning of the 20th century in Germany and Europe. A current special exhibition at the Lenbachhaus puts the collaboration of this famous collective in a new light and shows connections to Bavarian folk art, Japanese woodcuts and works from many other countries and cultural circles.
"Fujiko Nakaya. Fog Life" at Haus der Kunst.

Fujiko Nakaya’s fog sculptures, on view at Haus der Kunst, are made entirely of the element water. As such, they challenge traditional notions of sculpture, as the artworks change at every moment depending on temperature, wind, and atmosphere. The exhibition is the first retrospective of the artist and sculptor outside Japan.

Last year, the Meissen Porcelain Collection Ernst Schneider Foundation celebrated its 50th anniversary at Lustheim Castle. To mark this anniversary, an exhibition that puts historic Meissen porcelain and contemporary ceramics in a refreshing, stimulating and entertaining dialogue. 38 ceramicists from Germany and abroad present their relationship to baroque porcelain in creative top-quality works.

“What do rabbits actually do when it’s not Easter?” – this important question is addressed by over 50 artists in whimsical, humorous drawings and texts in the current exhibition.
At the Valentin Karlstadt Musäum in the Isartor towers in the valley, fans of Karl Valentin and his partner Liesl Karlstadt can discover curious objects, recordings, reproductions and archive material from the life and work of the great comedian.
Easter in Munich – Good Friday rattling in Munich
On Good Friday the church bells are silent in Bavaria. From “Silent Friday” on, instead of bells ringing, you hear the so-called Good Friday rattling. Altar boys parade through towns and villages and call to prayer in church with wooden rattles and clatters. This continues until the Easter Vigil. Then, the bells return from Rome (according to a popular explanation) and ring out for the Gloria.
Why not pay a visit to one of the well-known places of worship in Munich and enjoy the silence – or, if you wish, the special atmosphere of a church concert or a festival service:
Churches in Munich worth seeing
The Frauenkirche is actually called “Dom zu Unserer Lieben Frau” (“Cathedral of Our Lady”). It is the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising and one of the city’s landmarks.
The oldest parish church in Munich, Peter, is located behind Marienplatz. From its tower called “Alter Peter” (“Old Peter”), you have the best view over the city.
At the Viktualienmarkt you will find one of the oldest churches in Munich: the Catholic “Heilig-Geist-Kirche” (“Church of the Holy Spirit”).
In the Lehel district at the banks of the Isar River stands the stately Evangelical Lutheran parish church of Luke.
Bavaria’s first baroque church is centrally located on Odeonsplatz. The Theatinerkirche also has an impressive interior.
In the same part of town, just a few walking minutes away, is the Catholic parish church of Anna, built according to the plans of Gabriel von Seidl.
The parish church of Ursula, also called the “Cathedral of Schwabing” because of its impressive dome, can be found in the north of Munich on Kaiserplatz.

April 15, 2022: Good Friday Procession “Way of the Cross of the Peoples” from St. Michael to Marienplatz
The Good Friday procession begins in the morning with a short devotion in St. Michael and then leads from Neuhauserstrasse and Kaufingerstrasse to Marienplatz. Here, under the direction of Cardinal Reinhard Marx, a large closing celebration takes place.
